I ' Thomaa_ Rupert Carroll, aged 05, licensee of the Mandevillo Hotel, eleven miles from Gore, was found dead early this morning underneath si. motor-car\ Carroll left Goro for Malidevillo by motor-car at 10 o'clock last-night. Ho was found about- two miles from Gore. Deceased was well and popularly known throughout Southland. Ho leaves a widow. ■ . . A'CHILD'S DEATH. Auckland, December 30. At tlio inquiry into tho deatti of Ernest Reginald M'Quillan, aged two, who died yesterday, it was supposed from the etfccts of eating lily berries, Dr. Kinder, who' performed the post-mor-tem, stated that 110 found fragments of .undigested pork in the stomach. Ho expressed tlio opinion that this liad caused,'- death. _ Tiao mother admitted locoing ,tho.., child on break, pork, and weak tea.?;?;'.;-':.#:. ' Iho Coroner .returned a verdict that death was duo 1 to convulsions arising ironi the. child being fed on pork. COLLAPSED AFTER ARREST. . ■_ ■ Auckland, December 30. 1 j Constablo Quinn arrested a man. apparently helplessly drunk 111 Rutland Street, and took him to tho police station in a taxi. On arrival ho found him ; dead. Documents found in tlio man's pockets indicate that Jus name is R. Mill;;, who was, at the end of November, ;i resident "of To Ruiti. He was about fifty years of ago, and evidently a labourer. . It js surmised that the man had been working at To Kuiti, and that lie eamo to Auckland for a holiday. .Inquiries arc 'bring made at' To Kuiti. The man was of medium build, about-.(sft. Bi.u. m height. Ho bad fair hair and a , moustache turning-grey.
; ACCIDENTAL POISONING. (Br T&lß&raph.—Special Oorrcfpondont.) rm' >a ' mer^'>0n December 30. Tjio death of Francis H, Usmar, a farmer, of Cunninghams, was the subjot of an inquest to-day. . Tho cvidenco showed that on tire even, ing of December 19 dcceasedl returned from Fcifding, and, after having some toa, went down to the bails to help his wife wi tli the milking. He was in his usual health, and, after ho liad milked two cows, ho went into the separatorroom, which was practically in darkness. Two or three minutes later his wifo heard a peculiar noise, and, thinliing something was wrong, shehurried into tho room fo her husband. Sh>) found him leaning over tlio watertap, and asked him what was wrong. Deceased replied that ho had got hold of. something, and subsequently stated that he must have drank somo sublimate solution. Ho vomited very much, and asked for a doctor. Dr. Willis camp, and ordered deceased's removal to the Palaierston North Hospital. Deceased usually drank from a cup kept ill this room, but that day the children. had removed the cup, and a glass, which wa,B ha-rdly ever used, .was'also kept iu tiie room. This glass was found oil the bench alongside the deceased. The sublimate must- have been ill this glass, and deceased, forgetting it for the moment, must havo filled up the glass with water . and drank the solution. According to the cvidenco deceased was not a man who Would take his own life.

YOUNG MAN COTS HIS THROAT. liworcargiu, 'Deccm'ber 30. A young man named Harry Donnelly attempted to commit snicido 'to* night with a safety razor-blade. He inflicted a cut about two inches deep on tiro throat, but did. not sever any important artery or vein. His condition is not serious. CAST AND TRAIN COLLIDE. I nvercargi 11, December 30. A milk-cart and train collision took place on the crossing near Wintoii this evening. When the cart was approaching tlio crossing the britchen strap broken, and the driver found it impossible to stop the horse. In the collision both occupants of the cart werA thrown out, and one, Thomas Holland, sustained a broken arm and sovero_ bruises. Tho other man, whoso name is not ascertainable, escaped with bruises about' tlio liead and body.
