GENERAL FARMING NEWS.
During tho Christmas holidays a number of farmers in the Jlanawatu district have been particularly busy, taking advantage or tho fine weather to save thoir hay crops. The crops generally aro turning out excellent, the yield far surpassing last year. Potato blight has made its appearance in tho Feilding district, particularly amongst the early crops The recent rains have played havoc with tho haj' crops in most parts of tho Eawke's Bay district.- Nearly all the small farmers have suffered to-a certain _ extent,' and dairymen particularly will feel the effects of the damage to their hay. One, farmer at Jleanee estimates his loss- at £50, and tho loss for the whole of the district runs into several hundred pounds. Grain crops that were not- too far advanced have not suffered from tho unseasonable ■weather, and for these the prospects are exceptionally good. A strawberry grower of Alexandra has had a reoord season. Although the season as far as his .crop is concerned is not yet done, In* has already sent away ovor 20,000 bottles. Ho sent jIOO one day last week. The> largest one-day consignment. is stated to have been that of Jlr, Briugaijs, who dispatched over 1900 bottles. Every cheese factory manager aims to make as good a quality cheese as possible, also to see a big profit balance on tho books.
