N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEI-
WALLACE DEFEATS FISHER. (By Toksrapbr-Proas Association.) Auckland, December 29. • Fine displays of tennis were witnessed at the Eden and Epsom course today in the semi-finals for the New Zealand tennis championships. The courts were fast,, and the lino weather attracted a good attendance. . The maxc'ii of tho day was that between 'If':- M. B. l'Wher and Wallaeo in the singles. Wallace took tlio first four games in tho opening set, and won 6 —3. Jf'islier then'asserted himself, and after leading s—o in tlio next set won 6—2. Tno third set was keenly contested, Wallace winning, 6 —4. Accurate placing gained tho fourth set. for Fisher, 6—3, ■U'allace being out-manoeuvred. Fisner led 3—o in t-ho iifth set, but at this stage Walla-ce commenced to play up, and • with brilliant driving took tliree games. Four all' was called. Fisher took tho ninth, but condition told, and Wallaeo won, 7—5. Eac'h player won 24 games.' Tho total tally of strokes shows-that iWallaco won 156 and lister 140. ■ Dickie, Wallace's , partner in the doubles game, won against M'Cutcneon after the-latter liad two sets in. Dickie drovo powerfully, and his uphill fight was applauded Dutlnc and Miss G. Gorrio commenced well against Swanston and Miss Gray, but experience told in the end, and the latter pair won. two sets straight.. > Ollivier and Miss Steele won easily front Frater- and Miss Gumming, 6—o, 6—2. . , ... lit- the men's doubles, Ollivier and Goss wore too strong for Swanston and Dr. Keith, but went down to M'Cutch-<-on v and Abbott in tlie semi-final. The final of tho ladies' doubles wont to Misses Gray and Baird, after a keen contest, with .Miss Borslow and Mrs. Scoti-Watson.
