FRANCE AND THE NEW HEBRIDES.
PROPOSED CESSION TO BRITAIN. OUTCRY BY FRENCH PRESS. By Telograph—Preiß A raocUtlon—Copyright Sydney, December 29. New Caledonian newspapers make vigorous protests against tho proposed cession of French interests in the Now Hebrides to Great Britain. Tho leading journal points out that tbo French largely predominate in the group, and complains of tho influenco exercised by tho English clorgy in administrative matters. It 6ays: — "They havo been in the habit of regarding tho group as entirely under their dominance. This lias been responsible for-much ill-feeling. If the Commonwealth secured control of New Caledonia it would be isolated, and Australian ambitions would ba allowed full play. The envious glances of . the Commonwealth on Franco's rich and fertiio territory in the Pacific, have never been hidden. If tho proposal is carried out the Republic's Ocoinio future vanishes."
