BIRD SANCTUARIES.
'A healthy interest has been aroused among school children of-Isow South Wales in nature study, and thei membership of the. Gould League of Bird Lovers, which aims,at protecting bird life has in tho tlirco years sinco its formation grown ill quite a remarkable way ■ Last year 158 branches, ot tho lea'guo wore formed, representing 8M new members, making a total of .)4(J branches, with .25,963 members. At the annual mooting in IsowSouth \vales the chairman said that tho mo\omont for tho preservation of wild life was spreading among the public geneially. He bad noticed during Ins rccent tour through 'Europe that thoro was scarcely a bird to bo seen ill Erancc. In England and Scotland bird-lifo was, however, fairly plentiful. _ Mr. I' rogatt (Government entomologist) made a plea for tho establishment of more,bird sanctuaries. Ho was, however, strongly of opinion that it was 110 use protecting all birds indiscriminately. Thcro wore some birds which, through the,want of n balance, or alteration of tho balance, might easily bepomo pests, as would cockatoos, for example, in a wheat district.
