OBITUARY.
AN EARLY SEI'I Lf.R. On Tuesday last the: death took place at the residence of her'.daughter, .Mrs. J. S. lhtssell, in Wanganni, of. Mrs. Thomas Hudson Davis, one of the pioneer settlers of the. district.. The deceased lady; who was in her 92nd year, was a sister of tho late Mr. T. B. Taylor, senior partner of tho lato firm of Messrs. Taylor and Watt. Before coming to New Zealand she. with her husband, had charge of St. James's Church School, Sydney, whilst Mr. Davis was organist of that church. This was about the years 1848 to 1850. About that time Messrs. Taylor and Watt, who were young sailors, purchased a ship's longboat, lengthened her, and named her tho "Catherine Johnston," and Mrs. Davis made a flag, and presented it to the young traders. They came to Wanganni, 'and commenced trading, running the first boats between hero and Wellington." Mrs. Davis and family came to Wanganui nearly fifty* nine years ago, and wont through the troublesome times of tho war, Mrs. Davis leaves four sons and one daughter, viz., Mr. Henry Inman Davis, Mr. Robert Taylor Davis, Mr. William Hudson Davis, Mr. Geo. Stephenson Davis, and Mrs. J. S. Russell.
