ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. A young man named Albert Wheeler, eighteen years of age, residing with his parents at 97 Elizabeth-Street, and employed by Messrs. F. Cooper, Ltd., seeds merchants, Willis Street, made an' attempt to end his life by hanging himself on Saturday afternoon. Ho was working in the establishment during the day and was sent upstairs for some seeds shortly after 4 p.m. Later, ho was discovered by a small boy employed in the establishment suspending from a wire-rope attached to tho ceiling. Messrs. Cooper and Clark were acquainted of the affair, and held tho body of tho youth while the wire was being unhitched. Taken -down, Wheeler immediately went off into convulsions. Dr. Mackin was called in, and advised his removal to tho Hospital, where lie is at present progressing satisfactorily. It is understood the unfortunate youth has been worrying for some timo over his health, which has not been too good. Recently lie went under an operation.

RUNAWAY ON THAMES RACECOURSE.

Tutchen, the rider of-Manaia in the Steeplechase at tho Thames meeting, sustained concussion of the brain and a broken shoulder. When ho fell, the horse continued on the inner course, and as the others finished on tho course proper, knocked down- two Thames girls, Misses Tilspy and Wind. The former was seriously hurt, sustaining concussion of the brain and minor injuries. Miss Wind also suffered concussion of the brain, but her condition is not serious.

At tho inquest on Ralph Reynolds, a verdict of accidental death, with no .blame attachable to anyone, was returned. ' Palmerston N.i December 27. A sad bathing fatality occurred at Foxton Heads on Boxing Day. Harold Bade, of Shannon, aged 29, was bathing near the mouth of tho river, when he was caught by the undercurrent, carried out, and drowned. The body was recovered in tho evening, two miles away. His friends tried unsuccessfully to reach him and one, named Turner, tried to rescue him by the aid of . reins obtained from a cart. Eade then disappeared.
