Auckland, Deeomber 23. - Warder Anderson, who acted in tlio capacity of storekeeper at t.lio Mount Eden Gaol, was assaulted ??y two prison* ers.tliis morning, and seriously wounded in several places on tl» head by blows from an iron bar, Particulars of the assault are not yet available. It is" understood, however, that oiie of the prisoners concerned is a man who was recently transferred to Mount Eden Paol from the Invercargill Reformatory Prison under sentence for assaulting a warder at- the southern prison. The' motive is believed to bo a desire to obtain somo keys which the warder carried, and which the prisoners thought would open the way to escape.
