"When the Taihape District High School broke up for tho vacation on Thursday, over fifty children were absent on account of an cpidemic of chickcnpox, whooping cough, and other maladies. Twenty-six non-commissioned officers from tho Taihapo and Mangawcka district cadets will attend the' non-com-missioned officers' encampment at Folding. Lieutenant Dixon will havo chargo of tho local men. Tho following girls of the Taihapo High School obtained certificates m connection with tho homo arts examination:—Eileen Surchase, Ida Mortland, Phyllis Oldham, Bertha Reicliardt, Gertie* Timbs, Maude Wapp, Elma Wakeman, Dora Addis, Victoria Bartosli, Ida Finn, May Gordon, and Jean Jackson. Tho following boys obtained proficiency certificates in connection with tho woodworking classes: —Arnold Crawford, Walter Hay, John Holder ,_ Alfred Lennox, Verne Welsh, Ray Young, LauroncO M'Culloch, Stanley Clarkson, Lewis Deaiic, Lanco James, Claudo Tyson, and Norman Anderson. It is stated that the Government is negotiating for tho purchase of the Mangaohano Block, of 30,000 acres, at present owned by tho Natives and leased to Mr. G. P. Donnelly. It is also stated that tlie Government intends to dispose of tho property to a landholder in the Hawke's Bay district.; ~ * . .
