A man named Massie had descended ,i shaft at French's For,est, when ho was overcome by the fumes of an explosive gas. Two of bis companions, O'Sullivan and M'Nnmara, descended in turn to rescue him, but were overcome by the fumes.

A fourth, Turner, faeed death and sent the uin'onseious men up. When he leached the surface, himself he collapsed. Massie has succumbed, but the others have recovered.
