, . . Murital School. The annual broaking-up and distribution of prizes of the Muritai School tcok place in the Eastbourrio Hall in the presence of the parents of the children and man}' visitors. Instoad of adopting the customary idea of arranging a full programme of vocal and musical selections for tho oveuing, tho headmaster, Mr. Sanson, introduced several interesting competitions amongst the various standards in spelling, reading, and recitation. Though tho result was' amusing in some instances, the idea is highly instructive and crcatcs confidence in tho child. It also is the means of adding considerable interest to the work of tho children, causing keen competition as well as being responsible for a marked improvement all round. Considerable pleasure was afforded tho grown-ups by listening to the charming attempts of tiny dots to spoil out words almost as I big as themselves, and the excellent results attained wore in a great measure remarkable. Tho chairman of tho School Committee (Mr. J. V. Kelly) took occasion to tlmnk all those who generously donated prizes for the children, practically overy prize being presented from residents or visitors to Eastbourne. The Beautifying Society awarded a special prize for tho pupil who gave the best rendition of a poem, "How to _ Plant- a Tree." This was won by Miss Tui Dixon, Master Dudley Shortt, being second. Sout(i Wellington, The breaking-up 'ceremony at the South Wellington School took place 111 tho Central Hall yesterday afternoon, when the headmaster, Mr. J) lux, in tho absonce of tho School Committee, artei a few brief remarks on various topics connected with school life, presented Dorothy Startup, the dux'of the school, with Mr. Crengel's gold medal; Willie Matheson with Mr. Youman's medal tor most "tries", gained during last seasons football; and Cyril Cameron with Mr. C. Russell's medal , for the'best allround footballer. Miss Haigh, a higlilyrespected teacher, who is leaving for England for good, was presented by the staff with a set of eight leather-bound copies of tho poets. Misses l'airbiothei and Francis also received mementoes on their retirement' from tho teaching staff. Six pupils were awarded Navy League prizes for essays, while all the Navy League members of tho school branch received certificates commomorativc of their visit to H.M.S. 'New Zealand. After cheers for the teachers and tho singing of the National Anthem, the pupils dispersed till February 3 next. A donation of a guinea to-tho.games fund was forwarded by Mr. E. Bold, who wrote appreciatively of tho work of the teachers.

Island Bay* A very, pleasant ceremony closed tho school vear at Island Bay School on Thursday afternoon, when the assembled scholars wcro addressed by Mr. AY. IID Bell 31.1'., who also distributed the prizes and certificates. Mr. Bell's felicitous speech found greatfavolli* with his vouii£ audience, and his remarks were vigorously applauded. Mr. J 0. Sliorland, chairman of the School Committee, and Mr. J. Mills also made brief addresses, after which tho committee and staff entertained Mr. Bell at/ afternoon tea.
