NEW TRIAL GRANTED.
CASE OF THOMAS EDWIN BROWN. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Ree. December 19, 9.15 p.m.)' Sydney, Pec-ember 19. Tlio High Court- has granted Thomas Edwin Brown a new trial in connection with the shooting of Sergeant Hickey, tho chief ground being that the Judge at'the trial of the case was in error in telling the jury that they were not likely to find any other verdict than guilty or not guilty. .
The trial of Brown, an orchardist at St. Ives, a few miles out of Sydney, on a cltargo of .murdering Police-Sergeant Hickey, attracted a Rood deal of attention at the time. Brown, who had previously figured prominently in tho law courts as a frequent litigant, and who had filed affidavits on various occasions allegatiug corruption amongst officers of tho Judiciary, shot Hicltcy as the latter entered the bouse to arrest him, Ho conducted his own defence, supported by a pile of law hooks and documents, and finally appealed against tho judgment of the Court, which found him guilty of murder.
