THE POULTRY INDUSTRY

Lino Breeding. The writer was requested last week to give some information on line breeding. My correspondent was confusing line brooding with inbreeding. The latter is decidedly injurious, and is to be avoided. To breed from birds of tlio same blood in a direct manner will result in weakness of constitution. On the other hand, line breeding, in the Hands of a skilful breeder, is a safe procedure, and. is adopted by all leading poultrymen. Tiio lino generally adopted is to 'take t\yo birds of a different strain, They arc mated, and the progeny of theso aro mated back to tho father and mother, tiio females to the father, and tho males to the mother. From thom tho blood is again crossed, and so on, until practically a new strain is dovcloped. Felch's chart is tho usual guido adopted by poultrymen. Tho beginner would do well to defer lino breeding until experience has been gained in poultry raising. The selection of the primary pair is of 'paramount importance, and if not carefully chosen will give poor results.

Tho Conference. A meeting of poultrymen was held last evening, and a committco appointed to draw up the programme for the conference. Every effort will bo mado to make tho gathering a successful one. tt is anticipated that a great deal of progress will bo • mado in organising, und ail effort will be mado to bring poultrymen into closer touch, the aim being co-operation in marketing. The Men in Charge. It is certain that 110 0110 with any claim to being a middleman will aspire to the position of president of tho Sew Zealand Poultry Association. It is maintained by certain producers that the position should bo filled by ono engaged ,in the production of - poultry. Why this idea should find favour is hard to imagino. The distrust with which middlemen aro viewed by certain producers gives littlo encouragement to wards that co-operation which will mako for success. However, tho association may do worse than givo somo producer a chanco of office. It may result in more enthusiasm and aggressive work.

"Ma Luck Wis Out!" An amusing account of the experi* enco of a well-known resident of Roslyn (Dunedin) was related in the course of some conversational remarks during a trip 011 ono of tho Dunedin hill cars. Tho resident said: "Mon, I've had awfu' bad luck with ma' chickens this season. I wis settin' a sittin' of Buff Orpington eggs, under a Wyandotte hen, and she brought opt nino chickens. Tho was 110 sao bad, but sho did na stop there, for she must tramp on tlireo and kill them. That left me six, and 1 found thero wis five roosters, and only 0110 hen. Then tho eats started to como aboot, tho place, and I had my eyo on a big black alio, and I waited for him with half a brick, and, getting a gran' shot at him, I let fly, missed the cat, and the half-brick went through the fencc, and killet live chickens, and I was left with only 0110 rooster! Ma conscience, 111 a luck wis oot I I wis oot to kill something, 11a doubt, but I had no thought to harm the chicks."
