FIRE LOSS OF £40.000.
.TE KOPURU SAW-MILL BURNED. (By Tslesranh.—Press Association.) DargavillQ, December ]8. The To Kapuru sawmills havo been destroyed by fire, which was caused through hcatc.d hearings of machinery. The firo .was discovered by t'he watchman. ; The, fire.suppression apparatus at tlie mill was unable to ,copc with tlio outbreak,', and -the Dargavillo Brigade and engine were summoned. After covering tho.nino miles' journey it could do no good as the fire bad too great a hold, but it sav.ed £80,000 worth of timber. ' The manager, Mr. Corde, states that all was safe' at 5.1.0 p.m. Five minutes later the.alarm was given. His estimation of the loss is £40,000. All tho machinery and building were totally destroyed. . Tho building was of two stories. A large amount of timber was saved, and wiil sell as third-class timber.
The fir 6 is still smouldering, but thero is no danger.
It/will mean tho ruination of tho township of To Ivopuru, and will nut 100 men out of work. It is not known whethcr(tlie mill was insured.
