A SMART ARREST. MAN.: .WITH LOADED REVOLVER, Auckland, December 13. A fow minutes after midnight last liigiit a constabio arrested a man in possession of a live-chambered loaded revolver. Tho constable's attention was attracted by suspicions sounds from a right-of-way giving aceesis to a boardinghouse. Presently lie observed a man come from the direction of tho house carrying a portmanteau. The constable asked lor an explanation of tbo man's presence at that tiino of the night. The man refused to give any. A visit was iiiado to tho boardjnghouso and another man, whom the constable had reason to connect with the first man, and who was boarding at tho place, was requested to come along also, The two men and the portmanteau wero taken to tho polieo station, where the men gave their names as Thomas Edwards, aged 00, and Richard Carpenter, aged 30. .The landlady complained that tho portmanteau and tho clothes it contained belonged to a boarder named G. L. Gillbaud. Both men wero arrested on a charge of stealing the portmanteau and contents, and Carpenter was further charged that he was an idle and disorderly person in that without lawful excuse ho had a loaded revolver in his possession. At the Police Court this morning both meii were remanded till Tuesday. : HQVE TO IN A HURRICANE. NIAGARA'S ORDEAL. Auckland, December 17. , Tivo days after the Niagara left Vancouver she encountered a gale of hurricane force lasting three days. The vessel was. hove-to for fifteen hours. Huge seas battered her sides and washed tiie decks, and tho passengers had an uncomfortable time. Tho steamer, however, suffered no damage olid during tho gale she proved remarkably steady. MERCHANT'S AFFAIRS. • Auckland, December 18t In the Supreme Court application was renewed for a discharge ii> ; bankruptcy ui' Walter Francis Darby, formerly a wholesale merchant. Counsel for the Official Assignee opposed the application, and stated that two brothers were not only creditors in the estate, but, tinder their father's will, shared nil interest that, but for applicant's bankruptcy, would have, gone to the debtor. Mr. Justice Cooper granted tho discharge, but suspended tho order for two months, lie could not niako, an order to exert pressure on bankrupt's brothers. CHARCES iSf THEFT rROM HOTELS, tturtotiin, December 17. : Roderick Munro, alias Bert Williams, and James Alfred Martin, alias Thomas Burton, appeared together before Mr. Widtlowson, S.M., in the Pclico Court to-day, and were charged, with a series of thefts from hotels. Evidence Iming been • given in connection with each charge, and accused having reserved their defeii:e wit'.! regard to each, both were committed for trial, bail being allowed for eac'li in their' own recognisance of £200 and two sureties of £100 each. On a further charge of the theft of an overcoat, Martin was remanded till December 24. HEAVY FINE FOR OBSCENE LANGUAGE. Hastings, December 17. At the Magistrate's Court to-day Edward Lonergan was fined the maximum penalty of £20 for using obscene language in the hearing of women. Tho Magistrate, Mr. M'Carihy, said tho language would be a disgrace to a pig's-sty. BROACHED THE MAILS. □linedin, December 17. Gordon Cummings, aged 18., pleaded guilty in tho Police Court to stealing postal matter containing postal notes and. a money order for £•'>: al»o to forging Nimmo and Blair's nanie to a postal order receipt. He was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence. BRIEF MENTION. Wanganui, December 17. Cyril Heberley, the young man remanded from Wellington, charged with theft of clothing valued at £10, appeared before tho magistrate this nxcraing. Tho police had no evidence to offer, and the.case was dismissed. Hastings, December 17. For negligently driving a motor-car, Alexander Dunbar Pcddie was fined £10 and costs,
