They have been on trikcr'iiow for nine weeks. They have ot had an increase in wages for forty ears... Owing to "the'slackness in trade liirty-one years ago they agreed to a eduction in wages from 13s. per day to !2s. -They have been continually jeered t byV'tha employers. They had four bortiye conferences. ''Their travelling time to the Patent lip was stopped without hot-ice being iven to the union. They had received ravelling timo for working at the slip ver since it was built, some forty years go. Through tho employers stopping heir -travelling time the men lost 9cl. or day on their wages. Tho employers roko that agreement as well as several thers which had been in existence for ears. Tho employers said wo would ave to get an award. "Tho shipwrights cancelled their regitration under tho Arbitration Act, and lined - tho Wellington Watersiders' Jnion as a branch union. Tho employrs would not recognise the shipwrights s a branch of tho Wellington Waterido Workers' Union. Tho employers •ould- not recognise tho Wellington Waterside Workers' Union in their disute with tho shipwrights. The employis would not recognise the United 'ederntion of Labour as a negotiating ody. ""The employers wanted to employ erniaiient shipwrights at a lower rate f wages than that paid to casuals. Tho hipwrights wanted one rate of wages ir all members in tho union. The eniloyers wanted to reduce our holidays ro'm nine days a year to five. Tho omlo.vers wanted the shipwrights: to -work ig'lft shifts at ordinary rates of pay. 'lie employers wanted to toll us how to un our union; how much' members liould pay to join; who the members hould fie"; and' what they should pay ;cr wcol\« "Tho shipwrights thought, and still liink. they should run their own atairs."
