Thirty-eight of ■ the minors are dead. ' 1 ~ It is not known whether the explosion was duo to dust or gas. Tho reseda work is being (Rcc. December 17, 0.25 p.m.).-' Hew York, December 17. Eye-witnesses describe tlio Vulcan mine explosion as being equal in appearance to a volcanic eruption. Flame and smoke shot out of the mine's mouth, and the whole mountain roeked from the explosion, while the detonation was like tho noise of a thousand cannon. Forty men were working in the miiic j at the time, and only two were rescued. The victims wero all married men. Their bodies, when recovered, were frightfully mangled. Their wives and children crowded to the mouth of the mine hysterically giving way to their grief. There wero pathetic scenes, which continued hour after hour. Father Garrigan penetrated the mine, ahead of the rescuers, at the imminent risk of bis life, in order to accord the last rites of tho Church to any dying persons ho might find.
