THE SEAMEN TAKE A HAND.
—$ . ■ ; - : --6ußanticipation that the seamen might -take a hand and play an important part in helping the strikers ! out'of the difficulty they have been landed in' by the blundering of the Federation of Labour seems likely to be realised to-day. Already the seamen's delegates and the shipping .owners, have been in conference, and it is understood that an amicable •'understanding was arrived at satisfactory to all parties. The seamen do not. belong to the Federation of Labour, and being untrammelled by any ties outside the interests of their ■own ■ organisation, were able to handle their own affairs in their own way. The result is understood to be that .the seamen will return to their ships under an agreement which they regard as fair and reasonable, and wliich includes registration under the Arbitration Act. It may be expected that other unions will, follow* the common-sense course now pursued .bv,.i,the seamen's delegates. There is absolutely nothing for them, to gain by continuing idle, and the astonishing thing is that they were unable to sec this long ago. , ■ ■ ■„ _.
