WANCANUI.

Tlio Wanganui county engineer reports that the roads in his district have suffered somewhat severely as a consequence of the recent heavy rain particularly in the •higher country. Tho I'arapara and Mangamalni Koads are impassable through slips, and it will take several'days 1 to clear them, while traffic is moro or less interrupted on the various other roads. Apropos of roads the "Chronicle" voices the oft-repeated complaint re the shocking inadequacy of communication between Wangnnui and the country districts surrounding it. In urging that something be done to give inland settlers better access to their holdings it describes their plight during such weather as we have had lately as most unenviable. Some of these settlers have had to send their wives and families back to town. It can scarcely be conceived that vehicular traffic cannot go inland from Wanganui for more than about twelve miles. On the Kaurapaou lioad nothing has been done for live years and a great stretch of country full of possibilities cannot bo developed for lack of roads': The "Chronicle" suggests an annual "pilgrimage" of business men, members of Parliament, and tho Minister of Public Works to the inland districts as the best way to make tho wants of the district better, known and to learn more about tho requirements of tho settlersMr. P. Haily, Conciliation Commissioner, took evidenco here yesterday in the coach workers' dispute and will'forward his decision thereon from Wellington. ;•■■>■;•■ ■;■ I
