A fire broke out at 2.30 this morning in a Cnincso restaurant in the main street, occupied by Willie Wong, and spread to fclio. adjoining premises of Little and Fairey (butchers), William Kirchner (confectioner), and Mrs. Ingram (draper).. The. (lames had a good hold when the firo was discovered, and the shops were gutted. Nothing waa saved. The prompt action of Constablo Cou- ■ nor saved the lives of Mr. and Mrs. Kirchner and two children, who were sleeping in the .upstairs portion of tho premises. The insurances wero as follow:— Harding's ' Building occupied by Messrs. Littlo and Fairey, butchers, and Jamie Lee (restaurant), £350, in tho Royal; Building, occupied by Mrs. Ingram (draper) and Mr. Kirchner (confectioner), £400, in tho Alliance, and £600 in tho North British and Mercantile; Ingram's stock, £200 in tho New Zealand office, £900 in tho Royal, and ££00 in the State office. Lee's furniture £115, fittings £20, and stock £15, all in tho New Zealand office; Kirchner's stock, £250 in the.Northern .-Union. Little /and Fairey were uninsured, and nothing was saved.
