SWIMMING.
THE CONTROL OF CARNIVALS. The Wellington Swimming Centre met last ovening for the purpose of considering the following remit submitted by tho executive of tho centre: —"That during the' present season all carnivals in the town'baths ho run b.v tho centre; that all competitors shall nominate which club they represent, the centre to retain/20 per cent, of tho net profits, and the remainder to be divided amongst the various clubs in proportion to startsM."; Mr. H. C. W.. Blick was elected to the chair in place of Mr. J. F. Atkins, who resigned the position of chairman in order to represent the Wellington Centre on the Kew Zealand Council. On behalf of tho executive, Mr. Cooper moved the motion, and expressed tho hopo, that tho delegates would pivo it their serious attention, because in his opinion it was a matter which was going to do something towardß tho advancement of tho sport. Ho contended that during the past few years the sport had altered materially, and last season's carnivals were far from successful. Personally ho was in favour of the centre controlling the carnivals, which should be restricted. Mr. Atkins seconded the motion. Mr. G. Hill thought that the motion would impose an injustice on some clubs. Mr. F. Wilton said that the club carnivals bad been failures owing to the shocking carnivals which the centre had put on. The public had seen enough of tho centre's carnivals, and the clubs also had had experience of the kind of carnivals which the_centre ran. He was against the motion. A free and rather warm discussion followed. : The motion was, then put, and was lost by about 9 votes to 6.
