Churchill, First Lord of tlio Admiralty, demurred, alleging that partisan speeches were not Mlited i'or professedly jion-part.v gatherings, and instancing : Lord Sclborue s speech in October last. The League replied that no member of the executive committee or officer of the leaguo had ever criticised the Admiralty on such occasions or proceedings., Tho present luncheon would bo wholly devoted to a welcome, showing the Motherland's appreciation of the. kindness and hospitality extended to the officers and crew during their visit to New Zealand. -Mr. Churchill thereupon acceptc-d the invitation, provided the Admiralty were allowed to publish the correspondence.
