FIFTY YEARS AGO.
- "Tho Resident- Magistrate has summoned a meeting of the inhabitants for one o'clock this day at the Rutland Hotel in order that the superintendent may bo furnished with an expression of public opinion as to the best place for the ferry. There seems to be much difference oil tho subject. Certainly many disapprove of the position selected by Mr. Roy, and wish the boats and punts would ply from Major Dune's Creek to the opposite bank. There, arc objections to this or the Victoria Avenue, scheme. And' altogether it appears to bo just the sort of question on which a public meeting" should be called for tho purpose of discussion and decision. The .public must pay for the, ferry; it will be. maintained for their convenience; and tho wishes of the majority on such a matter ought to guide the conduct of the Government." —Wanganui "Chronicle," November 20, 1856.
