IN HONOURED REMEMBRANCE
AN INTERESTING MEMORIAL
Having been a seat of activity, in tho troublous days of the iuaori wars, the bones of many Imperial soldiers ■■ lieburied in this historic town, though long since dead, the departed bravo am ! not altogether unlionoured. The memorial is an oblong block of concrete masonry on a baso of rough racks, and lying sprawled along the top is tho figure of a sleeping lion rniher well fashioned in concrete. 011 each end of the block are panels of marble, and there aro two panels on each of tho sides inscribed on. which aro tlioso who med 111 the wars at or near Wanganui. ■ ■ Tho first plate reads:— "In grateful memory of the sallaut officers and men of Her Majes- ■ ty'.s Imperial Army and Navy and ■ Colonial I'orces, who dieu m the----service of their country during tho . long wars with tho Natives of these ■ ■ islands, and who lio buried 111 or near this town, this monument was . crcctcd by thv inhabitants of IVa- ' ngamii, MDCCCXCJI.
