, DROWNING OF CONSTABLE. .■ COMRADES' KFFOBT3 TO SAVE HIM. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, December ]■{. An inquest concerning tho death of William-James Carson, a constable, who was drowned on Friday, was held yesterday. In describing the occurrence, Constable Burke- stated that deceased could swim only a few strokes. Deceased caught hold of witness, and tlwy both sank, hut separated, anil the latter coining up breathless floated round for a time without seeing anything of Careon. Constable. Wade about that time cried out, "I'm done." Witness then reached the shore, got a boat and assistance,' and dragging operations wcro-comiii-encccl. The tido at the time was rising, and running strongMr. Fraser, the coroner, found Vlml Constable Carson met his death by accidental drowning", and added that deceased's two comrades had rendered all possible assistance in t-ho attempt made to rescue him. KILLED BY A HORSE. Cambridge, December 13. A well-known settler at- Maungatautari, named Lindsay Hay, was found dead this morning. Details are meagre, but it is believed a young horse Tro was handling knocked him down, dislocation of the neck resulting. Medical assistance was quickly summoned, but was unavailing. Hay loaves a widow and little (laughter. ; BANK CARETAKER FOUND SHOT. GlSborne, December 14. An old man named George Humphreys, a caretaker in Hie Union Bank, was found dead in an nuthouse at tho rear of tho hank this morning. Appearances point to suicide by a revolver shot, the result of financial worry. SALOON-KEEPER'S DEATH. Naplw, December 13. Olaf Nielson, keeper of a billiard saloon at Tuke-tapu, aged 61 years, was found dead in bed. Tiro inquest showed that heart disease was the cause of dentil. , FALL FROM A DRAY, A carter named Hugh Docherty was admitted to the Hospital on Saturday afternoon with a broken log. Ho sustained tho injury through falling off his dray.,.
