Pllmmerlon. ■'%: The district nurses of St. John,"in their rounds throughout .tho city, mako many friends among the children, and it has been their custom for ..some time .past to give them a treat in some way or another at this particular time of the year. On Saturday a change to the ordinary form of entertainment provided was made and the children, numbering between sixty nnd seventy, were taken .out to I'limmerton for a day at the seaside. Out of town, tho weather was delightful and it was a very happy band that raced along tho sandy beach, paddled in the water, and played games and ran in races, and no better treat could liavo been devised. Some of tho little ones had novcr been so close to tho sea before, and oven to thosu who had, it was quite a'different sensation to picnic besido it and play in the sand as the.v. did on Saturday. Unfortunately, owing to hor duties in town, Nurse Macsndrew (senior nurso) was unable to accompany tho party and Nurse A£alton lvou ' hi charge of tho children. Mrs. W, B. Fisher and somo of tho members of the Nursing Guild, assisted in looking after them. If it was a slightly weary band of children that returned to town somo little time after six, it was one that was rapturously content with its day's outing, not the least part of the joy being tho surprise gift thnt each received before returning home. Tho district, nurses of St. John wish to thank all who assisted them in their pleasant-under-taking. Kindergarten Break-up. It was a pretty sight that was to bo seen in St. l'eter's Schoolroom on Saturday afternoon when the Methodist Free Kindergarten held'their annual entertainment before breaking-up for tho summer holidays. A large ring of tiny chaird on tho floor marked off the space which was reserved for tho children, and in they marched looking very fresh, rosy, and clean in their white frocks or littlo white suits. After a brief prayer they sung a hymn and then prepared themselves for the performances of tho afternoon, which really embodied a portion of tho year's work. Tho action songs were prettily sung and a series of. songs which developed m sequence an idea or action wero interestingly performed by., the.': children. Tlie boat song was lirobably'cuo of the most taking of tho former, tho slow, sleepy rhythmic sway of their bodies being rather charming, even if some of tho very tiniest ones would stop in tho middle and watch their neighbouring pair. 'It was quaint to hear these little ones singing most lustily tho "Soldiers of the Queen," and ail the time waving tho flags in their hands. It was planting tho seed betimes. In the midst of the Christmas song, which was to end tho programme, iho curtains hiding part of tho stage from view, were pulled aside and at tho sight of the gorgeous Christmas Tree that was revealed, the song ended in vehement . cheers. Thrilling moments, in which each child was called up to receive a gift from the hands of a wonderful Santa Clans, followed. A brief speech, thanking every' olio for their interest in tho Methodist kindergartens, was made by the Eov. Mr. Chapman, who told liis hearers that tho tlireo kindergartens administered by their board cost between five and six I hundred pounds a year.
Children at the Auckland Exhibition. Six thousand children visited the Auckland inhibition on .December 5, and enjoyed themselves immensely. The visit by the littio folks was equally appreciated by the authorities, and at us meeting on Friday the executive agreed that t'ne result of the experiment was so satisfactory that it should ha made a permanent' feature of the big show. .Accordingly it was decided that a "(Jhi.U droit's Day" should bo arranged onco every fortnight, and that on those days tho prico ot admission for .'children should bo reduced to one-fourth''of the adult rate. : Mr. and Mrs. Badham . aro spending a fow weeks at Hotorua. .'"
