A SHOWMAN ARRESTED.

Auckland, Dccembor-12.-At the show grounds at Epsom shortly alter .7 o'clock yosterijy evening a man _iiamccF_William M'Ciotid,.-who is running a Wild West side-show, was arrested by Constable Wales on a charge that ho discharged a pea riflo at William F. Oxenham. Close to the living and show tents occupied by M "Claud is an encampment -of a side-show named Webb's Cirsus, at which Oxc-nham is one of the attendants. About 7 p.m. yesterday Oxenham and another attendant were attending to one of the horses of the show, which was restive, and Oxenham had occasion to call out a warning to his mate that if he were not careful the lwrso would get into a barbed wire fence. Tho shout brought M'Cloutl from his tent, with a caution to Oxenham to "cut . out that., language," whereupon Oxenham retorted that there was no "language" to cut out. Oxc-nham states that M'Cloud went back to his tent and immediately afterwards reappeared with a rifle, which he discharged in" tho direction of himself and his mate. Oxenham went and cosu-pl;uu(.'.-.l to tho police, staling that after the shot was . tired something whizzed, between himself and his mate, who were standing close together. Constable Wales came in response to. the complaint, and as ho came near M'Cloud's • tent he beard the latter apostrophise a curious boy who was straying lieai' tho tent lo "get out and hurry up." ■ Tho constable states; that at t'iio timo M'Cloud bad a revolver ill his right hand, and emphasised bis warning by firing oil' the weapon iii the direction of tho boy's At that.-... moment M'Cloud saw the const able, approaching, and he ran into his-lent,' with Hie constable in pursuit. Tho constable chased him through the' lent and , caught M'Cloud, placing; him under arfost. Later tlio constable took.charge of four pea rifles and another-revolver that were in M'Cloud's tent,-and woro used by tho showman in giving exhibitions of marksmanship. When- M'Cloud camo before the Court this morning . Sub-InspccLor Johnston asked f0r.,,;!, remand for ~a week.
