EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE'
BUSINESS FOR THE CONFERENCE. The order paper for the annual conference of the New Zealand Educational Institute has now been issued. The conference is to bo held at Auckland on January ,5, and a largo number of remits are set down for consideration. The most important item oil tho paper is tho following recommendation from tho executive: —
"That tho N.Z.E.I, devote its main endeavours to securing, in the coming revision of tho Education Act, tho following principal reforms: —(a) The inauguration of ft Council of Education, which, under tlie control of Parliament, shall have the direction of educational policy and administration; (b) tho placing of' the inspectorial and teaching staffs under the control of some central authority, such as the council referred to above, or tho Public Service Commissioner, or some other body appointed ad hoc. (e) An adenuate scale of salnries for teachers and inspectors. (dl Provision for a sufficient supply of trained teachers, (e) Substitution of some better basis than attendance for ill" computation of salaries."

Snlarios ami superannuation arc the subject of eleven remits, while other matters to be dealt with are svllabus and school work, sanitation and health, etc.
