" ■' .-

Certtre to Run Carnivals. There is to be a meeting of ttfo Wellington Swimming Centre on. Monday evening next for the purpose of considering an important suggestion, namely, that the centre should control all carnivals... "Splash" only heard this on Wednesday, and it is difficult to sum it- up, but the idea bounds good, but wo want more particulars. It's a matter that should be fully discussed by the delegates to tho centre, and it behoves everyone to be present at the mooting. Duke Kafianatnouko. ( The famous Hawaiian swimmer Duke Kshanamouko has stated that he will ho unable to visit Australia and New Z-ealand this summer, as he has certain business engagement's to keep. This announcement has been d decided disappcintmerit to swimmers. They still express a. hope that the New Xc-alaiid Amateur Swimming Association will not allow the project of bringing 'this great swimmer to New Zealand to drop. It goes without saying that- tho visit of such a world-famed personage would do much for the sport here. Om> is inclined to think that the various Now Zealand centres should make .a concerted move in this matter. League Football and Swimming. At a recent meeting of the Council of the New South Wales Swimming Association ail acrimonious debate arose over iho application of a member of tiie Drummoyne Club to clear himself of a charge of professionalism. The. swimmer (states tho "Hefcice") admitted playing football under Kugby League rules. It was a holiday—a picnic—match, and it was against a liiigby League team. It- was not, however, under League auspices. }lr. 11. ti'icse (Heehahite) opposed tho application. 110 contended that the individual had infringed the amateur status. Ho also stated that lie knew for a fact that tliroo men who last year swam with Iho Drummoyno Amateur Club were League footballers. This accusation brought the Drummoyne delegates to their feet amidst uproar. The chairman asked Mr. Grose how long lie had been aware that such was the ease, and ho replied that lie had known it for twelve mouths. Sir. (Jrose then gave the council iho names of three wellknown Drummoyno amateurs of last year, "whom -he alleged to be League footballers. One was, lie said, now a member of the Balnsain League Swimming Club. Two still remained with Drummoyne. The executive were instructed to go into the matter and report to the council. In connection with tho original case, tho chairman pointed ■but that if an amateur played the thirteen aside game ho did not necessarily become a professional unless he plaved under the jurisdiction of tho League gLvcrniiig body. They had two s< cm statements before them, and if they were subsequently proved to 1.-o ineor-

rect ho would have no possible cliaiwo of being designated an amateur. Ho had certainly gotio close to the- wind, but there was no reason, as far as their information went, why his status should he ' iti;eii away.

A motion was eventually passed to tho off off t that tho swimmer in onestion had done nothing to injure his amateur status.
