NOTES ON THE RACING. ■ (By Telegraph.-.-Special Hejorter.) Wbodville, December 10. Thi> exceptionally heavy rain which fell all day left the going as heavy as could be, "and some, unlooked-for results were reco'rded. • Birklino won tho In? handicap, after ft close finish, and an Auckland Cup candidate,, in Sir Solo, scored a surprise victory iii tho Borough Handicap. Other candidates for the.two miles at ElSerslie failed badly. Tho day's racing passed off without any untoward incidents.

After the scratching peri had been freeiv used there were still 19 runners for the Maiden Plate. Good Night (Boniforra—Dreamer) was the. best backed, but Play Off and Ngarua had hosts .of admirers. There was a long delay at the barrier and the favourito

was put.on the outside. As the tapes were released ho jumped back and the leaders had gone nearly a furlong when ho started, (ml ho galloped anything but well in the going and did not imrrovo his position. Play Off was soon in command on the fence and he won pulling up by two lengths. Whakahaki came from a Song way back and P,ouinania ran on well, but Nganm after being in tho van stopped badly after going live furlongs. ■ '

Hill and Ahpi'lirothocfc wore evenly backed in the 'Hack Hurdles. Auldearn made the running for six furlongs when Ahorbrothoek rushed to the front, hut Kill was always in his wake, and. taking command at tho three-fnrlong post, she came on and. won easily. Tailrangi, a rank outsider, beat Abcrbrotliock for second place, and the others were beaten off. Marble Head was puilcd up and Roxer lost his rider.

The Grandstand Hack Handicap was run in :i heavy downpour. Master Lupin, on tho rails, was quickest to sic* 'gin, but Axis and Patronynic soon rushed to tho front and loci into tbo straight whore Te lioti Hoii and Invader threw out challenges. The lantmcntioliod trio woro lighting out the linish when Master Lupin. nnmo with a late run and won by a length. Head.; separated the other pair. .Te Hon Hon was fourth, and Sir Fisher next.

Birkliin? awl First Consul-were'the elect in tbs big handicap, and thc-y filled

the places. At the, start linmer led from Jlysteriach, with Mangaroa, Multiply, and tho favourite handy. The latter last ground in the back stretch, but iio got a. nice- run on the fence round the bend, and, in tho straight, hard-ridden, ho beat First' Consul by a neck only. Mysteriaeh was. third, and Mangaroa next. Ten runners went to the post in the Flying Hack .Handicap. Bon Rain, Iliad's Hero and Heather were evenly' backed, but a rank outsider in Tribunal turned, up, and won nicely from Iliad's Hero. Sar.tovna, whose rider seemed to take matters very easily, finished quietly in third place. The favourite ran badly.

The Auckland Cup candidate Sir Solo created a big surprise iu the Borough Handicap, which he won comfortably after Black Lupin looked to have tho race in safe keeping. Mount Victoria and Semaphore made play to the turn, where the favourite wont 10 tho front, but, in tho straight, Deeloy tools Sir Solo out wide, and got on to the good going. In tire run nomc ho buried his opponents, and won in hollow style. • Another Auckland Cup candidate : n St. .Francis was backed down to a very short price in tho Hack Welter, but tho best ho could do was to finish a poor third. Picrmont led Ebonite and Immensity down tho back, but round the turn Braebim>. rushed to the front and led into tho straight from Immensity. Tho latter took charge at the distance, and won a good race by a neck, Tho Electric Handicap was tho .second leg of the double, and as ilw favourite in tho big race had'won, heavy reinsurances v.eie made on the Utal.sator. Nanmai gave a lot of trouble at tho harrier, and the dispatch was __ a straggling one. Grattan, an ti'o r.r"is, lost "several lengths, and A«ior,..witb Bradamante, led"'the field. Hounding the turn for home, Siiratnra moved into third place, and the trio were well clear of Hie field a furlong from home.
