MISHAP TO ARCTIC EXPLORERS.
STEFANNSON'S EXPEDITION. LANDING PARTY MISSING. NEW ZEALANDER AMONGST THEM. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyrittht (Rec. December 9, 9.30 p.m.) Vancouver, December 9. It is reported that a landing party from Stot'anuson's expedition went ashoro to hunt seals, leaving twentyfivo on board tho steamer Karluk. A fog hid tlio vessel, which then drifted seaward, and tho party was unable to rejoin her. It is now believed that they are endeavouring to travel overland to the Mackenzie liivev basin, with the object of striking a Hudson Bay post. It is not known whether they liavo supplies of provisions.
Those left on board tlio Karluk are supposed to bo safe. Tlio landing party included the anthropologist of tho expedition, Mr. Diamond Jennoss, of Wellington, Now Zealand.
Mr. Diamond Jenness is a brilliant young New Zealander, whose researches m tlio field of anthropology have earned for him considerable distinction. He recently undertook some-valuable research work in New Guinea as leader of ft scientific party from Oxford University. His boyhood was spent at the Lower ilutt, where his people have long resided.
