HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of ih-o Hisit Borough Council was held last evening. Those present were: —The Mayor (Jlr. E. P. Bunny), mid Councillors Hobbs, Ball, Parsonage, Cleudon, Kempthorne, Meldrum, Uawson, arul Dr. Pnrdy. In regard to tho Martin's subdivision matter it was decided to pay £140, tho. amount of tho solicitor's costs to be reimbursed to the council by Messrs. Casey, Hayes, and Stevens, who wero parties to the action in the. Supreme Court. , The applications of J. Babingtoti and J. T. Hawthorn for permission to show programmes of appropriate pictures on Christmas Day wero refused on a show of hands. The Town Clerk, Petone, wrote asking that a delegate from tho Unit Council be appointed to confer ivith tho Petone Council in regard to tho fixing of tliij weekly half-holiday for tho coming year. Councillor Meldrum was appointed. In regard to a letter received from a resident complaining of the action of some person in discharging firearms in the; vicinity of his hotise to the danger of life, it was decided to draw the attention of the person complained of to the by-law relating to firssrms Tho Mayor reported that lie had conferred with the Mayor of l'otono (Jlr. J. AY. Jl'Ewan) in regard to tho outlet for. western arm of tho Hutt Kiver, and tho latter was referring tho matter to bis council for tho purpose of having a committee of two set up to go into the matter. Tho Jlayor then moved that Councillors Parsonage and Meldrum be set up as a committee to confer with tiio Petone representatives. The motion was carried. A communication was received from Jlr. B. Stevens, a ratepayer, asking tho council to pay the whole of the costs of transfers of land between himself and tho council. It was decided to ad(bero to tho council's original resolution to pay only half tho amount. 'the borough engineer (Jlr. W. J. Bochc) reported that sewers in various localities had been Hushed. Repairs to Park Aveunp and Jlain Bond had been completed at a cost (to November 20) of .Cl]9 os. Itld. Repairing work was being continued on the Jlain I'oad Troia Park Avenue Us lleke Street. lie (the engineer) had. carefully <;»ne into the question of cost of widening Victoria Street at tho parts mentioned by the deputation to last meeting of the council. The cost would he about £161 Jfls. In reference to tho collection of house refuse in tho borough the engineer stated! that ho had studied the matter, and had come to the conclusion thatthe time was not ripe for tho introduction of any elaborate schemo in this connection at-present. One permit, had been, issued under the drainage and sanitary by-laws, making the total number of permits issued to date 81G. One gas connection had been made, bringing the total up to -186. The report was adopted, while the collection of refuse was referred to the Works Committee.
