NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[BY Glen'COE.] The Woodville Jockey Club's. Summer Meeting, to bo held on Wednesday and Thursday, is the solo fixture in the North Island this week. On Friday next, weights will bo declared for tile first day's events at tho Mauawatu Racing "Club's Meeting,, tho Wairarapa Racing Club's Meeting, tlie Auckland Racing Club's Meeting, and tho Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club's Meeting. The name of Imagination figures amongst the hack entries at tho Taratahi Meeting, but as tho mare won nearly £100U in stakes last season this is obviously an error. Perhaps the mare's navno crept in instead of Vacation, who is, still eligiblo to run in tho hack class.
J. Farmer, for somo eleven years private trainer to Sir. W. E. Bidwill, lias relinquished his post, and intends setting up as a public trainer. So far he has not definitely decided upon any place of residence, but tho choice will rest between Trontliam and Awapuni. Tho only Auckland representative in tho Great Northern Foal Stakes is Mr. G. Dunnet's Troy. For the last three weeks J. Lowe has been trying to ship ,Mira to Gisborne, but owing to tho waterside troubles, he has been unable to do so. Probably the grey horse will ,bo shipped on Friday next. His box at Trentham is to bo filled by tho Advance mare Avaunce, who has been in the paddock for tho past twelve months. Mr. P. Soames's horses Ladoga and Martian Princess aro both galloping well at Trentham, and aro oxpccteil to race creditably during the holiday meetings. They will bo seen out at Awapuni aud will then go on to tho Wairarapa. B. Deeley left Auckland by tho Main Trunk express last night to fulfil engagements at the' Wooc'lville Meeting, which opens to-morrow. . ■ H. Kingan, with Ebonite and Sartovna, and J. Stephens, with Merry Guy, left Trentham for Woodville yesterday. J. W. Scott and C. Pritcliard are going North by tho first train this morning. Surprise was expressed when it was seon that thc_ name of Mandareno was not included in tho list of nominations for tho Auckland Trotting Cup. ■ A fair, amount of rain fell at Woodville yesterday, but it did tho tracks no harm. Generally speaking the tracks at Woodville can stand a lot of wet weather, ami in tho past some fast times have been put up thcro in had weather.
.This year's nominations |for tlio Auckland Kacing Club's Summer Meeting are over a hundred in excess of the number received last year. Not much fast work has been done at Awapum lately, owing to the fact that tho bad weather left the tracks in a heavy state. G. I'rico is keeping Bronze, Lxpect, Bertrada, Ermcngardo", and tho two-year-olds working steadily. Ho il'i i'? vc a * eam " ln commission at the Manawatu Meeting. A. Shcirsbv lias Adroit Ngarua, Byron, and Makara in good trim, E„ Watson, , who has a team of half-a-dozen horses in work at Palmerston North, will bo leaving for Woodvillo to-day with four horses. Two other horses to go from I'almerston to Woodvillo to-day arc. Ngarua and Heather Like many of the other winners of important races in England this year iMz-Yama, who won tirn Cesara'vitcii Stakes, was a rank outsider in the betline. He won by a head from Grave Greek, and is generally regarded as having fluked the- race. Mr. C. Wadia owner of Fiz-Yama, is a I'arsee, and races in Bombay. Mr. AYatlia was at Newbury to sco Fiz-Yaina run in tho A-iituray Cup, but sailed for India a 'day or two beforo the Ccsarewilch was decided. Diavolo was to bo sont homo from Ellerslie to Napier yesterday, and will probably race next at tho Hawkc'a Bay Jockey Club's Summer Meeting. During tho past two years tho Masterton Racing Club has expended £-1500 in appointments and general improvements 011 its course. At a meeting of stewards of tho club on Saturday fast, tho programmo for tho Autumn Meeting was approved.
