I Tho Dutch Parliament v.iii shortly consider a schcmo i'or reclaiming 815 square miles of tho JSuydcr Zee, and converting tho remaining 557 square miles into a freshwater lake. The cost will be £15,750,000, exclusive of interest. It will take thirty-throo years -to carry out the schcme. It is believed that a portion of tho reclaimed area will be available for settlement in seventeen years. Tho scheme recommended by the Zuydar Zoo Vcreeuigmg in tBSG, formed the subject of a report in ISSM by a .Stato Commission. In' 191)1 tho Government introduced a Bill based en the recommendations of the Commission, providing for enclosing the fcnyder Zee by buildiiij; a dyke from the North Holland eoast, throtißlji the Amstddiep to Vierinsca. and from that island to the IfricsSand const, at Piaam. Tho entire work was to bo completed in eighteen years at an estimated cost of .£7,918,000, The- proposal wa* a imc-st important one, lor it. meant tho addition to tho kingdom ot a «ew_ and fertile province of ilie area of North Brabant, a saving of expenses on dykes, diminution of i inundations, improvement of coninumieftticn between the south ami north of the kingdom, and irnitectiou of tho isles of the sea. The Bill failed to become law. and in consequence of financial difficulties, the project had not, up to 1910, advanestl beyond the slagd of consideration.
