The inquest on the death of tbo Japa« ncso sailor oil tlio Kwanto Jlaru was opened to-day and adjourned till Monday. Tim boatswain, who is alleged ■!<> have fired the shots which enused the death of deceased, was present at tlio inquest, but subsequently returned ja the ship. Anxiety is felt an hoard, as it is feared tlio suites will resent tho presence of tho boatswain. BOATING FATALITY. AN AGED JJ.AORI DROWNED. ■CiSbt.rjl'B, December 7. . A boating fatality occurred at Tologa Bay oii Saturday afternoon. Three Maoris were crossing tho bat on tbeir way fishing, when the boat capsized in tlio surf. One Nntivo swam aslwro and left tlie other two clinging to the boat. A launch at onoo went out to tlioir as* sistance, but in tlio meantime tlio boat drifted ashore, and when the launch arrived on the sccive both Maoris Were iii shallow water., one supporting the other. This man was with difficulty gel ashore iu a semi-conscious stale. The doctor was immediately sent for, but tho man collapsed, death duo to shock. The deceased was a well-known ideality, and was familiarly known as His. Mime was 'JVpura, and ho was 77 years of age.
