Piiiikhurst, who arrived by tho Majestic Irom New York, has been arrested. tlie police boarded the Majestic off | lymmith, and conveyed the Suffragette leader, who did not resist, to Devonport, Irani whence the party motored to iiXeter prison. Some ul the Suffragettes engaged a tug to pursue the police, but tho tug w;v? forbidden to approach. Suffragettes from all parts of the Kingdom congregated at Plymouth Docks, and wero greatly exasperated when they discovered they had been deluded. Others kept an all-night vigil at Bristol prison, and wero molested TTy the crowd. STORY OF THE ARREST. ''Times"—Sydney "Sun" Special Cables. (Rcc. December 5, 7.5 p.m.) London, December 4. So shrieked a boat-load of spraysodden Suffragettes alongside the White rm ""' r shortly aftor noou.> llicy were too lafe, however, for an hour previously a police boat, conveying Inspector Riley, Chief-Constable Sowcrb.V, lour detectives, and a wardress, left Devonport, proceeding three miles out to tho incoming liner, which anchored whilst tho polico party clambered on board.
Mrs. Pankhnrst, who was in lior state-room, was notified tiiat tho polico wanted her on t-ho upper-deck. She sent an emphatic refusal, and so Inspector Riley and Chicf-Constablo Sowerby were conducted to her cabin. Chief-Constable Sowerby ordered Mrs. Pankhnrst to accompany him. She rciused, adding: "1 do not know you!" Inspector Riley then said: "iiut you know me." Mrs. Pankhnrst again vehemently protested, asking to see tho warrant, but slio was informed that, being under parole, a warrant for her arrest was unnecessary. After another refusal, Inspector Riley arrested her, and handed her over to the wardress. Tho passengers on hoard the liner cheered the party as they descended the ladder. WOMEN'S VOTE IN THE UNITED STATES. Washington, December 4. Suffragists appeared before tho House Rules Committee, asking for tho formation of a House Committee to deal with til© whole question of women's suffrage throughout the United States, Opponents to the proposal were also heard, the speakers declaring that working women were likely to lose more than they would gain'through suffrage. Tfuj operation of women's suffrago in other countries, including New Zealand and Australia, was quoted in favour of the proposal.
