UNIVERSITY EXAMINATIONS.
NUMBER- OF CANDIDATES. The matriculation and entrance scholarship examinations hM annually 'under tlie aegis of the New Zealand University aro now taking placo in Wellington. Altogether there aio 1370 candidates for matriculation (as against 1300 last year), and 182 candidates for tho entrance scholarships (as agninst 154 last year). Of i'ho total of 1370 candidates for matriculation, 19 arc also candidates for entrance scholarships to tho Military Collego at Duntroon. As far as the four centres aro concerned, the number of candidates are as follows; — Scholar* Matricuship latkm. Auckland 2/' 25ii Wellington 15 170 Christchurch .... IS 150 Dunediu ......... 15 193 Tlio notable fcaturo both this and Inst year is tho largely increased number of candidates who aro taking as optional subjects history and -geography. Two years ago the Senate emphasised, tho 'importance of these subjects, and took steps which practically made them essential to the successful preparation < f tho English paper, without obtruding the fact. Of tlio 258 candidates for matriculation from Auckland, no fewer than 157 'have taken up geography, and of tho 175 matriculation candidates from Wellington 120 have taken up the history paper, as havo 110 out of 150 candidates in Christchwch, and 105 out of 193 candidates in Dunedin.
