AN ACT OF COERCION;
I ECHO OF HOBART WHAKF STRIKE In the Hobart Supreme Court on November 10, before Mr. Justice Nieliolls, the case was concluded in which Burgess Bros., importers, of Hobart, sued the Waterside) Workers' .Federation of Australasia, Timothy Watson (then .secretary of the Hobart branch), and Frederick Katz (secretary of tho Carters' and Drivers' Uiiinn) for ,l"2flo damages for injury to'trade- through coercing the shipping companies to break their contracts. The case was the outcome of tho 1 rouble m ,'lnly. .!. Morris, secretary of the central body, Melbourne, and six trades union olfij cials of the defendant union, yave cvi- | deuce in defence. The evidence for the plaintiff was that floods of Burgess Bros, were held up, and tho trade union officials swore positively that if any trouble did occur, on the wharf last July they knew nothing of it, except through tho papers. Mr. Justice Nieiiolls, in summing up, said that such ovidenco must he discounted, and ho thought the men were not ncconiiilishcd liara. Tho jury returned a verdict for plaintiffs, with £50 damages.
