CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. Tho services of the special constables who have dono duty in tho city during tlio period of industrial turmoil wero tho subjcct of congratulatory referenco $ *I'° meeting of tho council of tho iv ellington Chamber of Commerce .yesterday afternoon. In this connection the chairman (Mr. C. W. Jones), in tho Absence of Mr. A. E. Mabin, moved tlio fallowing resolution, which was unanimously carried/ "That this Chamber placcs on record its appreciation of tho services of tho mounted and foot special constables who have assisted to maintain law and order during the strike—particularly those from tlio country who came so promptly to tho assistance of citizens at a timo when tho city was in a state of ■ disorder. It further records its appreciation of the conduct and bearing of the 'specials' during a, time of extreme trial and exasperation." The attitude adopted by tlio Government during tho strike was also tlio subject of commendation, and a. resolution was carried as follows:— "That tho firm and unhesitating support given by tlio Government to all necessary stops for tho maintenance of law and order and tlio keeping open of tho channels of commorco deserves tho thanks of all citizens." Mention was also mado of tho valuo of tlio services rendered by tlioso who had assisted towards tho"continuanco of steamer traffic, and it was dccidcd that tho council should place 011 record its appreciation of the services of tlio officers and engineers of the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd., and also those' of the other companies who had assisted in keeping tho servico going between Wellington and Lyttelton, ana' tlio other main ports of tlio Dominion. MR, TREGEAR'S SLANDER. (By Telegraph—l J r€es Association.) New Plymouth, December 1. Tho Taranaki County Council to-day passed a resolution appreciative of the action of tlioso who camo forward to help tho Government in tho maintcnanco of law and order and to keep tho ports open. Strong exception was taken to Mr. Tregcar's slander of tlio "specials," and tho opinion was expressed that Taranaki men wero prepared to continue to supply labour as long as was' necessary.
