Short, of Nelson, and occupied by Miss Louisa Bo we an a boardinghouse. Xo. 14 was occupied partly by Miss Bowo and partly by Messrs. Standidno and Co., painters. Miss Howe's sister was awakened in Xo. 18 at about half-past three by a smell of smoke. She looked for signs of lire, but found none. She returned to bed, and was soon again disturbed, and this time found that both buildings were burning. Xo. 18 is insured in the Sun ofiicc 'for £'1100, and Mir.s Bowe's furniture and effects are covered by a policy for £L'Rj in the Atlas Company. There is an insurance on Xo. 14 of £900 in tlio XonvHi Union, but Miss Howe's property in that building was not insured. Standidge and Co.'s stock was covered by a policy ' for £500 in the Yorkshire office. .Messrs. Standidw's insurance was on Thursday last reduced from £1000 to £000 as a sale, was beins held.
