DEPARTMENTAL RIVALRY.
Yesterday's holiday (St. 'Andrew's Day) was set asido by Civil Servants for the annual inter-Departmental tournament and tlio fixture was favoured by fino weather. All kinds of athletic sports were held on the Basin Reserve, and at Newtown a tennis tournament was decided. Points gamed by the Departments in these events will bo added to those earned at last Saturday's swimming sports, and tho whole will bo aggregated to decide tho contest for tho challenge trophy presented by Sir Joseph Ward. The events aro under tho auspices of tho Wellington Civil Service Amateur Sports Club, and aro being controlled by a special committee, assisted by a number of local enthusiasts. Admission to the ground was freo, and there was a fairly largo attendance. Afternoon lea was provided by tho committee for competitors, officials, and their friends. A very strong team was entered by tho Post and Telegraph Department, and the majority of the events on the Basin Reserve were carried off by them. For tho lawn tennis games, connected with the tournament, tho Nowtqwn Lawn Tenuis Club gave the uso of the Constable Street courts. Tho games, which lasted from half-past 8 o'clock in tho morning until 5 o'clock in tho afternoon, were controlled by a special committee, consisting of Messrs. B. Millicr, A. M. Gill, A. M. Pratt, and J. R. M'Cluno (secretary). Generally, tho play was of a *good standard, though several of the competitors lacked tiro condition necessary to carry them through tho day. Results wcro as follow: — Ladies' Singles.—Final: Miss Horrell (Education) (2 on) boat Miss Brown (Education) (10 on), 40 —37. Ladios' Doubles.—Final: Misses Brown (Education) and Warren (Native) (5 on) beat Misses Horrell (Education) and Clyde' (Education) (2 on), 40-30.
