THE KAISER'S WAY.
271 ARCHITECTS' DESIGNS IN THE WASTE-PAPER BASKET. Tho nc-west "Kaiser incident"—an imperial coup d'etat it is called in one of the Berlin papers—is in connection with tho crectipn of tlie new ,4200,000 building', for tho German Embassy at Washington. The official "North German Gazette" one day last month contained tho laconic announcement that the Embassy will bo built according to plans of the Court architect, Herr von Ihno. It turns out that when Count von Bcrnstorff, tho German Ambassador at Washington, had ail nmlienco with tho Kaiser in Berlin, His Majesty informed him that ho was so displeased with tho award of tho prise by jury which recommended the design of Jlcrr Mochriug, one of tho most celebrated architects in t'uo country, that ho,had decided to consign the award, as iyeU as 271 other designs viewed by the jury, to the _ waste-paper basket. Tho i Kaiser said ho proposed making short work of the matter by simply commissioning Ilerr yon Ihno to draw up new plans. The jury whose award evoked the Emperor's disapproval included the Foreign Secretary (Herr von .Tagow), Count von Bcrnstorff, and some cf the leading architects of the Empire. Tho-Emperor said Herr Moehring's design was "not suited to Washington." The Press predicts a great controversy among architects over the Emperor's action, which is attacked not only on Account of its nnconventionalitv, but also because it is alleged that tho Court archi- I tech who submitted designs which hod j 110 competitors, Is not worthy of the lion- ' our tho Kaiser has now bestowed on him. Herr von Ihne, who is a personal favour- , ite of the Kaiser, is architect of tho new royal library and Kaiser Fricdrich Museum m Berlin.
