OBITUARY.
MR. ARCHIBALD M'LEOD. Another of the older residents of Wellington passed' away at an early hour on Saturday morning in the person of Mi. Archibald M'Lcod, tho senior partner in tho timber milling and joinery hrm of M'Lcod, Weiiy and Mopkirk, whoso extensivo premises extend from Johnston to Waring Taylor Streets, along tlio leathcrstoii Street side of the nud-city block. Tlio deceased, who d'-ed at liis residence, No. 19 Austin was a nativo of Helensburgh, on Sid Lower Clyde, not far from 'Glasgow. Ho came out to New Zealand some fifty years ago, landing at Dunedin in the year 1803. After a few months' residonco ill tlio southern eity ho dccidcd to try liis fortunes further north, canto to "Wellington, and has remained here ever since. j\lr. M'Lcod was an expeH at tho joinery trade, and having established himself in business, his work soon became known as the best, and later ho formed a partnership business which was known for many years as Waddelj, M'Lcod, and "Weir, which some ten years ago becamo the present iirm of M'Lcod, "Weir, nnd Hopkirk. Though past the allotted span of years, tho late -Mr. M'Lcod was at work up to ten days i ago, having always superintended the joinery shop of the business. The cause of liis death was heart trouble.
In ins younger days, .Mr. Jl'Leod'was a very powerful and athletic man, and it is stated that ho and Mr. Charles Stewart (of tlio Stewart Timber and Hardware Company, of Courtenny Place) held tho pair-oar rowing championship of Wellington for some years, when tho interest in rowing was much moro general than it is to-da,v. The deceased was a moinher of tho Victoria Howling Club for some years, and for nigh on fifty years ivas a member of St. John's Chureli. Tho only member of Mr. M'Leod's family in New Zealand was his sister, Mrs. Wilson (mother of Messrs. J. and A. Wilson, the wellknown contractors). Tho deceased leaves a. wife, one eon, Mr. Donald M'Lcnd (who is engaged in the. business), and two daughters;, Misses Annie and Mary M'Lcod. The funeral will take place today. During Saturday afternoon members of tho Victoria Howling Club ceased play for a time as a mark of respect lor the memory of the deceased.
MR. JOHN lIABB. A private, telegram rccnivod in Wellington on Saturday morning announced tho ilfilth at Havolock North, Hsiwko's Bay, oil Friday, of Mr. Jolm Barr, at ono t-imo Mayor of Eastbourne. Tho deceased, who was born near Glasgow sixty-eight years ago, arrived in Wellington by tho old steamer Ara,wa in 18S5, and entered tho service of tho Wellington and Mnuawatu Builway Company soon after lie landed. Ho was a decorative artist of considerable ability, and before coming to New Zealand had been managing ono of the largest, house dccorating firms in Now York, and had superintended the carrying out of tho internal work in the Viindei'bilt and Astor mansions. Tho climate of New York did not suit hi 3 health, and he returned to Scotland, coming nut to Now Zealand soon niterwards. He was in charge of the Manawatu Railway Company's painting shoo until j ust. before tho Government took over the line. Taking up his residence at Muritai, lie stood for tho Mayoralty of .Eastbourne, and .was placed at the head of the poll. In the following year lie removed to HaVi lock North, where ho became a fruit fanner. Until recently bo had enjoyed excellent health, lie was an older of tho Presbyterian Church and a staunch Prohibitionist, and was held ill the highest, respect by all who knew him. Ho has left a widow, a son (Mr. M. Burr, of Tfaveiock North), and Tour daughters (Mrs. .W. Roberts, of Palnio.rston North: Mesdamos I l '. K.
