The Magistrate allowed '24 hours for Herlihy to pay the tine. It was stated that tho' defendant was n tram conductor, and that lis had called a passenger a "scab." Trouble arose in tho car through the passenger taking exception to the conductor's remarking to some one else that he had refused a "scab" a passago on hi:; car. Herlihy lost his temper and caught hold of tho-passenger, but tho two were separated, and when tiio man 'was 'km-ing -fcho ear HeAlihy called him a "scab," and said that he would wait for him.somo night.
Insulting Wortf. John Thompson, who pleaded guilty to a charge of using insulting words ("scab") in Cuba Street, was lined £3, and ordered to pay 12s. witnesses' oxpenso, in default to undergo 14 days' imprisonment. Loiterer Fined. Owen ICiely, a waterside worker, was charged with having loitered in Taraniiki Street aft«r beang directed by Special Constablo Leslie IJiehsrd Hamilton to move on. i\lr. J. I) 1 . Dickson appeared for tho accused, and entered a pics of guilty, lie stated that, tho breach was a technical one. A fine of as., with costs lis., was imposed. Drove Gar into Specials. Harry Ilill, who appeared on a charge of having driven a motor-car in a dangerous manner in Johnston Street, was fined £3, with 'costs 13s. N. 31. Carter, a special constable, deposed that the defendant was' requested to slow down, but drove, into some specials. Witness himself was struck on the arm by the car. Remanded cases. A charge, of assaulting special constables, whi'e the latter were in tho execution of their duty, was preferred against a man named William Williams, for whom 3lr. P. .1.-'O'ltcsan appeared. -On' Mr. O'Reoau's appTication accused was remanded far a week.
A young man, named Alexander Johnstone, who was charged with taking part in a riot 011 Waterloo Quay on October 30, was, 011 tho application of the police, remanded for a week." An adjournment till December G was .made in the case of Ernest Ilackett, who was chargeil with having used insulting words (including "scab"). Mr. I'. J. O'Kegnn appeared for the defendant. Thomas Seainbury, a traction-engine driver, appeared on a charge of having refused to stop his rehiclo when signalled by a special constable to do so. He was charged also with having refused to produce his license when asked for it. lie was remanded till. December 9. George Saunders was remanded till December (i on charges of having used threatening behaviour in 'lory Street on November 27, and'with having assaulted James Brown. William Cowley, who was accused of having used threatening behaviour in Cuurtenay Place, and of having used obscenc language, was remanded till December D.
