CIVIC AFFAIRS.
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The City ■ C-ciincil met last niglit. There were present: The Mayor (Mr. ,1. P. Luke), Councillors 11, Fletcher, .1. E. Fitzgerald, A. 11. Hitidmarsh, R. A. Wright, M. F. Luekie. K. Tirgear, J. Fuller, T. C. A. Hislop, W. J. Thompson, A. R. Atkinson, 3. Godber, G. Frost, and W. H. P. Barber. On tlio recommendation of the lieserves Committee, it was decided that temporary forms be provided by the City Engineer for the band rotunda at Neivtown Park, and further that the sum of £'200 be included on the next year's reserves estimates to cover the cost of draining, soiling, and' grassing the Nairn Street Reserve. - Tiie. application of Mr. M. L. M'Clure for permission to plant a portion of Town Belt .Section 10, oft" Katinga Street, Kilbirnie, was granted, subject to the following conditions: — 1. That notices be erected stating that the public have free right of access. 2. That a stile be erected- for access for the public. 3. That the enclosure be fenced by the applicant, the nature of the fence to be left to the discretion of the City Engineer. The forester will plant the land in the proper season. In view of the public having free access to the land no rental will be charged. The City Reserves and Baths Committee reported that they had been waited upon by a deputation from the Boys' Institute, together with representatives of tiie Swimming Association, with lespect to supply of water to t'ho proposed baths for the institute, at Tasman Street, lfc was estimated that about 100,000 gallons would be required to fill tlio baths, and the water would be required to be changed twice weekly. The deputation asked th.it the. council supply the water free of cost during eight months of the year, the institute paying for the water actually used during the remaining four summer mouths. As an urgent reply was required by the deputation, ami no mretiug of the committee could be arranged before the meeting of the. council, the matter was forwarded to the council for its decision.
it was decided that consideration of tlio matter be held over unUl the, next, meeting of the council. It was decided to inform the Mirainar Borough Council that the council cannot accept their olfer to sell certain pipes ami pumps, as there is no work in the city which would justify the purchase of the material. it was resolved: —"That the. Hataitui Municipal Electors' Association be, informed 1 that the council . do not favour the adoption of their suggestion t<) issue hose permits on paynfent of a fixed fro per annum, but the council will givo careful consideration to the question of rearranging Hie charges for water, meters, and generally .the system of supplying water bv .meter for ga.rdon purposes."
Tho following clause in the. Finance Committee's report was agreed to: — "That a ratepayer bo informed that tlio council have no power to remit tlio ratos which have been overpaid for some years past on account cf an error by the Valuation Department."
