Thompson, the American Consul at Sheffield, addressing tho Shef* field Chamber of Commerce, stated that, in anticipation of tho opening of tho Panama Canal, private and public bodies wore spending a hundred million sterling in the improvement of harbour facilities, railroad connections, and the canalising of rivers in connection with seven ports on tite Atlantic seaboard.
