On February 18,1918, three men wore fishing from a small boat outside the beach at Paekaakariki, but when thoy started to return a heavy swell capsized the boat about a quarter of a rail© from the shore. Two of the men, Malcolm and Ginarnan, clung to the boat, but tho third, Pengally, was drowned. Tho anchor had fallen out of tho boat, thus preventing it from drifting ashore. Repeated attempts wore wade by fivo rescuers to reach tho boat, but tho heavy breakers and strong current hampered them. Cairns, one of tho rescuers, was exhausted, and had to bo assisted ashore, but bis comrades stuck to their task for fully forty mintuos. Finally, tlio boat was driven insido by tho heavy seas, and tlio remaining two occupants of the boat were rescued in an exhausted condition.
This act of bravery was brought vjrulor the noticc of tho Royal Hunwiio Society of Now Zealand by Mr. E. E. Farusworth, with the result- that tho society decided to award a silver and certificate to each of tho naon concerned in the rescue, namely, Messrs. John Sanderson, Thos. Cairns, James Ashley, and John Cross, all of the New Zealand Railway staff, together with Mr. James Glasgow, of tho Vacuum Oil Co. Mr. W. E. Cocks, of the Missions to Seamoii, who acts as tho honorary ajpnt for the Royal Hutnane Society in Wellington, has arranged for tho presentation to take place at the Seamen's Institute on Wednesday evening next. His Worship the Mayoi- lias consented to make the presentation, audi Mrs. F. M. B. Fisher is arranging a musical programmo for tho occasion. As will be not«d from our advertising columns, the public are invited to bo present., and do honour to these bravo men.
