A CONFERENCE.
HARBOUR BOARD CHAIRMEN MEET. A conferenco of chairmen of tlio principal Harbour Boards of Now Zealand ivas held on Saturday, at wliicli tlio Prime Minister (tho Hon. ,\V. F. Massoy) presided. Mr. W. Ferguson, of Wellington, who is an oxport 011 harbour affairs, was also present; Tho object of tho conferenco was to discover if possible some means of bringing about a more satisfactory state of tilings in connection with tlio employment of labour on wharves. No particulars of the matters discussed were made availablo to tho Press, but it is understood that tlio chief proposal submitted was that tlio wharves should bo manned largely with permanent men,' who would bo guaranteed a minimum wago, and who would bo entitled to superannuation. The conferenco was only a. preliminary one, and tlio delegates presont at it will havo to refer the proposals to their several boards boforo meeting again. Mr. J. H.
