'• "V '' Yesterday the inter-State matches; were to commence in Melbourne, and I thoy will be continued to-day s *ihe I very best of the Australian players will bo competing at the fixture.;' Last week the. Victorian tea®,' was published in those columns, and also the players from whom the N.S.W., team was to be chosen. The South Australian tea® will be as follows: —Men: R. V. Thomas, E. C. Wliitolaw, F. E. Baritt, 6. Fisher, F. C. Bromley, G. G. f. Gardner. Ladies: Mrs. Rowb, Misses Sharpj Fisher,, and Laurie. Definite advice has also been received that S. N» Boust, who reached Frwnantle last Tuesday week, after an abscnee i,n' England of over • three years, will be a competitor at the Victorian championship meeting, and will be one of the team to represent New South Wales f, Victoria.' "Creat Inconvenionco." A discovery of a. most disconcerting nature was niado at the Anderson's Bay Pavilion, Buuedin, on© day . last week, it being found that a elean sweep ■ had. been made of- both the men's and ladies' shoes, and a number of pairs of flannel trousers (says the "Otago Witness"). Whether it is designed by the thief to start a second-hand establish-' rnent for tho disposal of tho goods is not known, but he certainly made a haul, and put the players to great inconvenience for a few days. The rii-an- ' her in which the ladies expressed their feelings upon discovering the loss is not recorded, but it' is' stated that some of the men summed up the situation in a slightly ■ picturesque fashion. M'Lpughlih's constancy. Thero were between 4000 and 5000 persons present watching the final of the United States singles championship between M'"l.oughlin and Williams, for the first two sets the play was . strenuous in the estr'&me, but;.after that M'Loughlin's- constancy triumphed over the meteoric. brilliancy of his opponent. The imports of the match point to the fact that, though' beaten, .Williatfis absolutely.surpassed the other in the spectacular nature of his play, and some his back-hand shots, says one .scribe, "smacked of the supernatural." M'Loughlin roa.v have had too much play of late. The' fact remains, however, that after the match he lay in the dressing-rooms with his eyes closed, ■ had apparently absolutely played. out. Amongst those who gathered round to congratulate him was Williams himself, ■ .who remarked to the prostrate hero: "WellJ Mac, you are a wonder, but I'll get yon next 'August," \"I guess you will, Dick," replied tho champion. Indeed,' the indications are not far short of this. It is possible, also that some* body'will "get" Williams at tho same ,time, for there ar.e' maiiy young men who are advancing to the fore with tho rapidity of a tidal wavo. Macphcrsoii, the Russian. New . Zealanders .were inclined to think that the cable man was attempting a joke when the' papers announced on October 9 last that "Macnhorson, a Russia® piayer, defeated Quill, 'ho New Zealander, at Dnlwich," But STacpliefsou is a Russia.il, right enough. An English- writer has the following note eontiernihg him and his brother: — "Young R. B. Macpherson, who is only sixteen years of ago; a-licl over from Russia, with his brother, A. Slacphorsem, showed unusual skill at Dujwieh for a boy. Mo teld me that- lie will he staying hi England until ilijj spring, and that his brother, who is in -a London bank, will remain for two years, I understand that whilst their father is a Scotsman by birth, he has a i naturalised Russian, in accordanoe with the custom of the country -applying to the calling of a stockbroker, but that the boys still remain British subjects. • What with the Jlacpbefsens and Count SantHarak'off-ElstoH, Young. Russia is forging ahead, at lawn tennis, which is the most popular game in the country. . 7n ii few years' time we liiii V Confideiitlv expect to see them cwftpotinc: for the • Davis Cui>. Their game is played 011- . tirely ou hard eouttj "•
