MARCH OF THE NEW UNIONS
CARTERS REACH 140. WATERSIDERS NOW OVER 1000. The Arbitration Watorsiders' Union received, about. 20 rccruits yesterday, the total strength now being well over 1000. Although this number is sufficient to work the ports in normal times, there is still room-for about 600 moro men. There are at present working on the wharyes about 400 men from tho country, who will roturn to their homes as soon as sufficient other men aro available to take their places. It is noticeable that amongst recont recruits there has been a considerable proportion ' of new arrivals from tho Old Country. All the' men available yesterday wero given- work. Tho two colliers Wairumi and Pukaki took 180 men. The Uli■naroai required a large detachment and mon had to be taken from some of the other ships to work hor cargo. More men than were on call could have been smnloyed. The new Carters' TJnlon has now 140 . members, and applications for enrolment aro coming in fast. Many men who were previously engaged in tho trade I are coming back, some of them -being from tho country Due who joinprl this week has been away from Wellington for seven years, during whioli time he. has been driving a mail coach.
